Moon Song -- Annette Hanshaw -- Classic Breakup Song

A classic breakup song sung beautifully by Annette Hanshaw. Moon Song Once I tried to capture the rapture of the night; Silly dreams I knew would disappear. But it seems they left a souvenir. One refrain eternally will haunt me; taunt me. It came from nowhere the night that we met, 'Twas like a melodious plea. Sweet Moon Song; That wasn't meant for me. Thank you for your reply! The leaves are too high for me to reach but a friend took a photo for me the other day which I have uploaded to Pinterest: pin.it/5XKgQ61LJ An app on my friend's Apple cell phone said mulberry and so did Google Lens on my android cell. But I have never seen any berries on the tree. I was thinking maybe an elm tree. There are 30 to 40 different kinds of elm. The leaves are not hairy. A neighbor thinks it's buckthorn but again I've never seen berries on it. Thank you in advance for any ideas.

    Who played St. John, Jokanaan?

    • @GildaTabarez
      @GildaTabarez 2 дні тому

      Jokanaan was played by Nigel De Brulier (8 August 1877 - 30 January 1948), an English stage and film actor who began his career in the United Kingdom before relocating to the United States. One of his most memorable roles of many was Tchernoff in "The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse" (1921).

    In general I have a lot of sympathy with Wilde, but not over Salome. There was really no excuse for such self-indulgence: Wilde was a profound scholar of Greek and knew the New Testament better than most. So all of a sudden he has an epiphany, and figures out that the REAL story is that it's all Salome's fault; not even Herodias' fault, as it is in the Bible, and certainly not poor little Herod's fault. The Baptist, according to Wilde's play (not very faithfully expressed here), had to die because of the unbridled lust of a nasty little girl. Oh, OF COURSE . . . the world is what it is because of those lascivious and indecent harridans who won't leave men alone. Mhm. No sale. But Wilde afterward wrote De Profundis and The Ballad of Reading Gaol, and made a good death, which is what counts.

    • @GildaTabarez

      The message of the play to me seems to be that desire, decadence and sexual perversion can have fatal consequences.

    It's interesting that the English lyrics mention the leaves and flowers of the trees, amid the ruins of the buildings, because that's something I find very striking about the color film you see of Germany right after its surrender in May 1945 - the cities consist of grey piles of rubble, but a handful of the street trees in the sidewalks have sprouted green leaves, and life in fact is still present despite the destruction.

    This is what Wagner meant when he called opera "total art", wiith a combination of drama, music and art, but this adds cinema, too, and I like it much better than anything Wagner ever did.

    I first saw this film when I was a child back in the early 70s when it was broadcast on PBS. I could hardly believe that Salomé was the same Ludmilla Tchérina who had portrayed Irina Boronskaya in The Red Shoes (1948) and Giulietta in The Tales of Hoffmann (1951). I didn't see the film again until over 40 years later but I had never forgotten her compelling performance and the unusual sets and costumes. I especially liked the billowing tent in the background. The French invented the avant-garde.

      Do you mean her step dad or her bio dad? I have read that Salome was not executed. According to one article online, Jewish historian Flavius Josephus and Byzantine Greek historian Nicephorus Gregoras wrote that Salome was crossing over a frozen river, when the ice broke and she sank in up to her neck. In her struggle, she wiggled and jiggled her lower body underwater, movements similar to her seductive dance for Herod. Salome's head was eventually severed from her body by the sharp jagged edges of the ice. Thus she suffered decapitation, ironically the same fate she had decreed for John the Baptist, except more slowly and painfully. He was also modest and kind, but don't mess with his family. He became the hero of my life when I was in first grade. An older girl was bullyng me in public school. My dad told her to leave me alone or he would beat up her father. It was no idle threat, because during the Korean War, my dad boxed in the Golden Gloves in the US Army. The bully left me alone after that. Then my dad switched me to Catholic school. No more bullies, except one, but I handled him myself. :-)

      This is not a ballet. It is a silent film based on a play by Oscar Wilde. The music is from an opera. The Dance of the Seven Veils is only a small part of the drama. A film requires a good actress, just as an opera requires a good singer, much more than a good dancer.

      @@GildaTabarez thanks for the kind reply ... yes, you sent the wrong link ... but i did search around and found the movie's full version on at least four different UA-cam channels ... some have different musics ... one was fully silent ... and one does have some interesting music that doesn't sound bad ... (see below please ...) only one of them happens to have a slightly better image quality than the rest ... i also found another not-too-bad copy on a Russian website, with a nice music on the footage, probably created originally for this movie but in later (more recent) times ... the problem with many of the ancient movies is that their original negatives are either totally lost, or worse, they are in an unusable condition ... (some producers either discarded everything to do with those movies that didn't sell well, or simply extracted the silver from them to sell the material in the market even if the movie did sell well in the first place but declined in attracting more viewers later ...) 😞 so, what's left of many of those great movies are some badly damaged often broken in parts positive copies attheir best ... it is possible however, to retrieve some usable images out of those bad copies ... but in the end, it never matches the original, unfortunately! and the lost footage are never to be found anyways ... ironically, Nazimova herself regretted acting and/or making ALL of her movies and wished she could burn "every inch" of them! could she have been the one responsible for the missing footage of some of his works? (she produced and co-directed Salome` for example ...)

    Like @GrantTarradeus, I came to this via my admiration for Val Lewton, Nazimova's nephew (he grew up in her house from the age of 5, his father having squandered the family's wealth gambling). But I also adore Richard Strauss, Oscar Wilde, the Decadent movement, and Salome's legacy as an inspiration to the early modernists. Wow. Now I must add Alla Nazimova to the pantheon. She was the catalyst for this amazing production. Her capitalization on the story's inherent critique of the male gaze in cinema is nothing short of astonishing. Thank you for sharing it!
